Contribute to the Ethnic Aisle

We are currently accepting pitches for our next issue!

From the mundane to the majestic, Black joy exists in spite of trauma without ignoring it. Black women are most often asked to create works that focus on direct, historical or generational trauma.  Not this time.

Joy can mean many different things to different people. We're looking for works that speak to what joy can look, sound, feel or taste like. Reflect on a relationship that keeps you resilient or the album that altered the way you look at the world. Share with us the first time you mastered a coveted family recipe or how motherhood has finally made you patient. Tell us about bringing joy to those around you, and when you learned to do the same for yourself unselfishly.

Tell us: What is the value of joy?

We're seeking submissions from Black and female-identified writers, illustrators and visual artists in Canada. Our rates for contributors begin at $100 per article or work.

Please send us a short paragraph outlining your pitch and/or 3-5 images along with an outline. Send to We’ll be accepting submissions until September 15th.
